Once Upon A Summertime (EP)
by Chet Baker
Released: Jan 1977
One of Chet Baker's best albums, this finds the trumpeter summoning his inner Miles Davis for a surprisingly vital bop set. The sometimes shaky Baker is in superb form, with the star rhythm section of Ron Carter and Mel Lewis and joining newcomers Harold Danko (piano) and Gregory Herbert (a saxophonist who would soon die of a drug overdose). Baker's pained crawl through the Michel Legrand title tune blows Miles' reading out of the water.
