Stairway to the Stars
Chet Baker
Released:
Aug 1965
Label:
Chet Baker
One of three CDs that compile all of Chet Baker's 1965 work for Prestige Records, Stairway to the Stars balances floating, stinging bebop with the kind of warmer, laid-back material that made Baker's reputation in the 1950s. He gets a bit lost in the funereal pace of the title cut but plays very strongly overall (check out the finger-snapper "No Fair Lady") and gets a lovely tone out of his flugelhorn. George Coleman's saxophone work is also a major asset. Those looking for a different, tougher-sounding Chet Baker should check out the CD On a Misty Night, from the same series.
