Chevelle are really rather brilliant in their simplicity. With so many of their alt-metal peers taking questionable detours into club music hybridization or even country pop, the Chicago power trio stubbornly (and wisely) sticks to their core strengths: exceptionally physical and stripped-down grinders that belie a keen understanding of the Tool to Helmet to King Crimson lineage. As with previous efforts, La Gárgola is well-balanced and solid from beginning to end. But if you do crave to hear Chevelle at their most focused and well-oiled, then go straight to "Under the Knife" or "Jawbreaker."
