You'd be forgiven for thinking Chico Mann had all but abandoned the funk in his electro-funk equation. Especially on Magical Thinking's first four tracks, the Afrobeat, cumbia and Latin funk that peppered the Antibalas guitarist's earlier releases seems muted, if not just MIA. A gauzy, woozy haze of ambient beats and blips settles over everything, giving the album the feeling of being stoned at a disco. But funk hovers at the edges and corners of sauntering, syncopated rhythms and lightly salty guitar riffs on tracks like "Same Old Clown" and the rolling, rollicking thunderstorm "Estrellitas."
