When she's fronting the Pretenders, there's no one like Chrissie Hynde: few in rock can beat her fiery passion and vision. Her solo efforts, on the other hand, tend to be the exact opposite, as history shows. Witness the dull collaborations with UB40 on Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" and Dusty Springfield's "Breakfast In Bed." And then there's the disastrous cover of "Baby It's You." Somebody close to her needs to give Hynde a swift kick up the arse in an effort to convince her not to do anymore of these kinds of covers. Safe in the womb of the Pretenders, Hynde is a genuine rock goddess. Outside of that context, Hynde sounds like, well, a pretender.
