Among Hindemith's crowd-pleasers, Symphonic Metamorphosis has to be the most beloved. So it's here (Tracks 1-4), but conductor Eschenbach and the NDR Orchestra prove their Hindemith love even better on the Konzertmusick (Tracks 8-9). There's less bombast than on Herbert Blomstedt's famed EMI recording, and the lighter touch lends an interesting spin to Hindemith's contrapuntal writing. Midori also guests as a soloist, for an exciting account of the Violin Concerto (Tracks 5-7). It can all work as a fine introduction to orchestral Hindemith, or else as a way to hear these pieces anew.
