Chuck D and James Brown are two of the most important pillars of modern music, and much of the sonic swagger from early Public Enemy recordings was jacked from James Brown, so Chuck's tribute to the departed King of Funk is more appropriate than it is surprising. Whether serving as essentially a hypeman on "Soul Power" or taking center stage with verses, Chuck sounds great over JB rhythms. There's something in those loose, funky grooves that perfectly suits the emcee's authoritative growl. By and large, this is a treat.
