It's kind of weird when movie stars decide to become rock stars (cough cough, Juliette Lewis, cough cough). While Jason Schwartzman's Coconut Records sound more humble and groovy than his former outfit Phantom Planet, songs like "West Coast" still feature melodious, California-based, anthemic indie pop. What sets Coconut Records apart from The OC's jingle-makers are more melancholic musings like "Summer Day," where plucked acoustic guitars slow-dance with reedy Mellotrons. Schwartzman invents emo-disco with the title track's four-on-the-floor drum beats and synthesized strings.
