The Afterman: Ascension
Released: Oct 2012
Label: Everything Evil/Hundred Handed Inc.
The first part of a double album recorded by the band over the course of seven months, The Ascension features the combination of mall-ready emo-metal and modern prog-rock moves (think Dream Theater) Coheed and Cambria are known for. That said, "The Afterman" brings back the days when such bands as Asia and Styx managed to synthesize No. 1 prog-rock hits ("Heat of the Moment," "Lady"), and "Goodnight, Fair Lady" practically sounds like Rush. These guys may not get the hipster cred The Mars Volta get, but as a result, their music is less self-conscious.
