The Colourfield's debut, Virgin and Philistines, remains one of the best albums of the 1980s, but this follow-up disappoints. Still, Deception is the kind of misfire that earned the LP a spotlight as one of Mojo magazine's Buried Treasures. The Colourfield's once-organic, acoustic-pop gets replaced by metallic synths and overproduction, though some gems remain. "Badlands" is a pop-y Terry Hall downer, "Monkey in Winter" echoes how depressed the band was when recording the album and the ravishing melancholy of "Miss Texas 1967" makes the tune a true buried treasure.
