It seems improbable that a Spanish flamenco singer and a Cuban pianist could perform the songs of a 1950s-era Mexican ranchera singer and come up with, of all things, jazz. But here it is; Concha Buika and Chucho Valdes have done it. They take Chavela Vargas' anguished repertoire and relocate it, by the sound of things, to lower Manhattan, where all passion must drink a stiff martini before expressing itself. It works. There are shades of Nina Simone in Buika's melancholy voice, and you can almost feel yourself shaking raindrops off your overcoat as you listen to Valdes' elegant fingerwork.
