This Austin-based quartet has been much lauded by critics since the release of their debut album Cotton is King in 1994. Their uncanny ability to blend Roots sensibilities and strong pop hooks into mini-masterpieces has been ignored until just recently. The 1998 album Kontiki, with its airtight and even more urgent melodies, pushed the envelope of their expertise. More recently, British retro-philes Oasis took Cotton under their wing, allowing the British press to froth over this overlooked American act. With the popularity of artists such as Beulah and the Apples in Stereo booming, the pop-loving glitterati should be prepared.
