The swamp-blues-gone-heavy-metal rocker "Pagan Baby" that kicks things off here is up there with C.C.R.'s best "jams" -- think "Keep on Chooglin'" and "Ramble Tamble." From there, attempts to push the borders a bit (lots of horns, keyboards and backup singers) make for an album that's a little light in the "awesome Fogerty guitar riff" department. But that doesn't mean fans won't enjoy the super-soulful "It's Just a Thought" and "Sailor's Lament," a sort of cross between "Proud Mary" and Bill Withers' "Lovely Day." "Rude Awakening #2" is supposed to be like "Revolution #9." Bad idea.
