We Must Believe in Magic
Released: Jan 1977
Label: Capitol Nashville
Loretta Lynn's youngest sister -- and the one with the longest hair -- Crystal Gayle scored her first hit with 1974's "Wrong Road Again," but earned her biggest with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," the tear-jerking Magic opener that bore the influence of both Ella Fitzgerald and Patsy Cline. Crossing over into both pop and AC, its parent album continued with a pair of songs that could have been imported from Ireland, a Cole Porter number and some choice woodblock before the closing title track, which finds this coal miner's daughter blasting into outer space -- it was the '70s, after all.
