Torch songs and cumbia, '60s pop and Cuban rap...you don't have to be a product of our culturally promiscuous age to understand CuCu Diamantes's eclectic debut album, but it doesn't hurt. These songs peddle impetuously through lyrics about the highs and lows of loving passionately and risking it all, while Diamantes channels old school Cuban divas who'd as soon croon as cut their veins -- all to stepped-up beats that echo New York's fast-paced streets more than Cuba's beaches. Diamantes is at her best on "Alguien," as her staccato singing spars beautifully with Yotuel's (Orishas) rapping.
