Curtis Mayfield was a true architects of soul who expanded the artistic possibilities of pop music from the 1950s through the '70s. But by the time of this 1987 live set, Mayfield was considered old news by black America. Thankfully, he was still a big concert draw in Europe, where he appeared frequently. Here, Mayfield mixes in classics from his days with the Impressions ("Gypsy Woman," "People Get Ready") with solo stunners like "Move On Up" and "Freddie's Dead." This is missing the surging energy of 1971's Curtis/Live!, but it's still a fine document of a unique American voice.
