Curtis Mayfield's brilliant soundtrack to Superfly is justly celebrated today, but his other cinematic scores during the 1970s have been forgotten. Short Eyes's ugly, ultra-realistic subject matter (it's about a white-bread child molester in prison) pretty much makes it a movie that few want to see. It's just a shame that Mayfield's alternately tart, sweet and frightening songs for the movie have been swept under the rug along with the film. His work deserves to be heard by any fan of '70s soul in particular and lovers of great music in general.
