Something To Believe In
Released: Sep 1980
After the disco opener "Love Me, Love Me Now" (a moderate dance hit), Curtis Mayfield steers this album towards his more laidback soul style, making it an overlooked gem in his catalog (a humble jewel, but a gem nevertheless). Mayfield revisits a couple of his old hits with the Impressions, including "It's All Right," which has been outfitted in a swank, almost Motown arrangement. "Tripping Out" is a mid-tempo hand-clapper that uses seductive Philly Soul strings and jazzy horns, proving Mayfield can still create a fantastic tune, even when he doesn't really bother to write an entire song.
