Superfly is undoubtedly the high point of a career stuffed with high points. Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack is much deeper than its inspiration, a film that survives mainly for its kitsch value. The songs ("Pusherman," "Freddie's Dead") are all masterpieces; poignant meditations spiced with menacing funk, Mayfield's biting falsetto and lyrical prowess. Essential.
