by Cyndi Lauper
Released: Jun 2010
Label: Mercer Street Records
When you think Memphis blues, a white New Yorker known for hits like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" isn't the first thing that springs to mind. But the inimitable Lauper has tried on many (fabulous) creative hats since her '80s heyday. The blues ain't exactly her bag, however: Her distinctive voice is overshadowed by her luminary guests, leaving Lauper to resort to "She Bop" pop in place of grit. And frankly, the conceptual issues throw up some mental blocks. But Cyndi's a connoisseur and she's got style, which is apparent on the funky Janis Joplin-meets-Sharon-Jones jam "Down So Low."
