On his debut album, L.A.'s Dam-Funk pays tribute to boogie and electro-funk, forgotten styles of early '80s R&B, but you don't have to be an expert in bygone sounds to appreciate Toeachizown. Dam-Funk recorded the album in true old-school fashion, laying down synth and drum tracks in real time, and adding his own vocals over the top; that spontaneity shines through in colorful, spongy grooves stacked like layers of a wedding cake on a bowed card table, ready to collapse at any minute. What at first seems kitschy turns out to be totally sincere: this is funk at its most seductive.
