Dr Dee
Damon Albarn
Released:
May 2012
Label:
Parlophone
The nonstop Damon Albarn finally releases his first proper solo album, and in stubborn Albarn fashion, it sounds nothing like the bands that have made him most famous, i.e. Blur, Gorillaz. The soundtrack to an opera based on John Dee, a scientific advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, is actually not Albarn's first foray into the opera world (see Monkey: Journey to the West). Alongside the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Albarn is quite the alchemist, whisking his poised monotone into a rich Renaissance/West African brew full of strings, woodwinds, organ, acoustic guitar and gorgeous choral accompaniment.
