Compared to his surprising self-titled debut, Sweetheart is a slightly more somber, if equally gleaming, affair of jarringly inventive, bizarre folk songs. Reeder still spins some funny yarns, imagining himself as Jesus on the opening track (so that he can command a bad coffee shop to wither) and an action movie hero in "You Should Have Wrote A Book." But the funny songs have plenty of straight faced undercurrents. The banner track, "I Drink Beer," is an ideal introduction to Reeder's whimsical genius: he deconstructs the modern male using a beer drinking anthem.
