Weiss -- a jazz-world drummer of note and a student of classical music -- has put together an ingenious suite. His writing for a 14-piece ensemble (including guitar, tuba/trombone, voices and harp) is strong throughout. Despite all the beat complexity of "Part One," there's a steady sense of direction that accompanies the introduction of each instrument's layer of hypnotic groove. The progression from "Part Two" (with its classical guitar) to the swinging vocalese-plus-sax improv of "Part Three" (and then onto the hard riffage of "Part Four") should win over fans of large-scale composition.
