Daniel Stefanik hails from Leipzig, but the slow, sweeping pads that open his second album suggests that his heart lies in Detroit. So do the quicksilver arpeggios of "Elektron Storm" and the bass of the title track. Looking beyond the Motor City: "1996" tips its hat at U.K. techno of a decade ago, "Port of Transition" nods to '90s Berlin and "Dazed and Confused" suggests Autechre at their most emotive. For all this, it's a thoroughly modern album, nostalgic but not retro, elegantly fusing old and new into a sound both classic and surprising.
