Darkthrone's unmatched ability to combine punk and metal and then bust out an anthemic classic-rock riff is something that set them apart even way back in 1992, when the band was one of the leading lights of the black-metal scene. When the group made the change to a more "punk" sound in 2006, they did not drop their obvious love for '70s rock; if anything, it got stronger. Released in 2007, F.O.A.D. is proof positive. "The Church of Real Metal" is like a cross between Bathory and Montrose; the title cut is practically a ZZ Top song; and "Raised On Rock" explains everything.
