In between Darkthrone's death metal beginnings and the change to black metal that came with A Blaze in the Northern Sky, this 1991 rehearsal tape was recorded. Drummer Fenriz added vocals in 1994 and it was released in 1997. The unbearable sound and pitch-shifted, insane singing were seen as unlistenable at the time. But over the years Goatlord has been the recipient of increasing cred, sort of the My War of black metal. Listening to it is not so easy, but no matter what format these songs are played in, they still sound gloriously blown out, like a 45 found at a yard sale.
