Rising to fame as American Idol's post-grunge hunk, Chris Daughtry opted to rework his sound for Baptized. Most of the changes revolve around drawing his music more in line with pop tastes in 2013. Lead single "Waiting for Superman" finds the singer reaching into his upper register while EDM-style flourishes dance around big, soaring choruses that would make Maroon 5 proud. "Battleships" is even more un-Daughtry-like. Layering acoustic guitars over programmed beats, it sounds a lot like one of those modern pop tunes that blur country and R&B until they're indistinguishable from one another.
