Take out your jazz scorecard -- a blizzard of stats are coming your way. Paul Desmond played alto sax with Dave Brubeck from 1951 to 1967. During those years, Desmond also cut a couple of duet records with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. When Desmond left the world famous quartet, Mulligan filled his role in Brubeck's band until 1972. That same year, Desmond rejoined his old band mates for this amazing concert. The two saxophonists keep their cool, melodic reserve, even as Brubeck and his rhythm section take hard, funky turns. It all comes together brilliantly, and shows what advanced sounds these supposedly old fashioned men could make.
