Those of you who think all the songwriting talent in Depeche Mode lies with Martin Gore are going to have to change your minds after hearing this album. With all due respect to his bandmates, one could be forgiven for thinking this is a new Mode release -- it's that good. Sounding like he's popped into the Mode studio to use all their equipment while they're down at the pub, Gahan has crafted something pleasingly derivative yet new, particularly with the excellent "Kingdom" and the beautiful "Insoluble." Perhaps now his songs will squeeze onto Mode albums a bit more often.
