As cofounder of the Eurythmics, Dave Stewart will forever be associated with new wave, early MTV and '80s nostalgia. Yet there's a side to the guy, going back to his youth, that's all about Stones-flavored roots rock. It comes out on The Blackbird Diaries. Recorded in Nashville, the album bleeds slide guitar, Keef-inspired riffs and country twang. As with mid-'90s Tom Petty, Stewart is a little too content with second gear. But his crisp songwriting helps buffer the overreliance on mid-tempo grooves. High-profile collaborators include Stevie Nicks and her spiritual offspring Colbie Caillat.
