David Archuleta has always been poised on the precipice of ... something. The pop stardom Idol promised? An adult artistic identity? A genre (adult contemporary? dance pop? CCM?)? His sixth album resolves none of our questions about Archuleta's identity. Everything here is perfectly pleasant, from the coffee-shop pop opener to the candlelit closer, from the toes he cautiously edges onto the dancefloor to his sweet, feathery tenor. But No Matter is so polite, so hesitant, it's hard not to take tracks like "Notice Me" as thinly veiled attempts to reach beyond his own boundaries.
