The classic title track was a big U.K. hit for Bowie, but the ruling rock intelligencia dismissed it as a one-off novelty number piggybacking on the U.S. moon landing. Even with the hit single, the original LP, Man of Words/Man of Music bombed. It was reissued after Ziggy Stardust took off, and finally charted in America. Not brilliant, but Bowie darkly balances Donovan and Mark Bolan-style psych-folk with his own more unsettling brand of rock weirdness. "Unwashed," in particular, is a neglected gem.
