Songs of Wood and Steel might be a grower, not a shower. Initially it makes for easy but not remarkable listening, with sometimes cacophonous contributions from the folkloric group Los Cenzontles. But over the course of the album, Los Lobos' David Hidalgo seizes the reins, injecting blues and country into the Mexican folklore; by the time you hit "Howling Moon" you realize a spell was being cast and you didn't even know it. An added bonus? Sales of the album benefit Los Cenzontles' cultural and music education center in San Pablo, California.
