Lanz is one of the primary innovators of the genre known as contemporary instrumental. In the early 1980s the wunderkind came out of nowhere with an aesthetic that was astonishingly mature and fully developed. On Heartsounds, the pianist's debut album, he transforms the heady arrangements of Steve Halpern and the prog-minded Vangelis into a pop music that's warm, positive and extremely inviting. This was only the beginning. Lanz would go on to score one massive New Age hit after another.
