The Big Dream coheres better than Lynch's debut Crazy Clown Time, which embraced the novelty factor a bit too much and banked on a guest star (Karen O) for the opening track. Here, Lynch sounds like Dean Wareham of Luna, his muffled, wry non sequiturs remixed for dubstep bass ("Last Call") and echoing balladry ("Cold Wind Blowin"). Tom Waits, Sparklehorse and Moby are all obvious reference points for these mood pieces with Tricky-style narration that veers between spooky and goofy. Ultimately it turns out hearing a mysterious iconoclast's nerdy singing voice is humanizing and often compelling.
