Released:
Label: TAO Records / Razor & Tie
Inspired by tour mates Dinosaur Jr. and the Meat Puppets, the Georgia quintet trudges through the murky underbelly of late '80s and '90s alternative, borrowing from bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine. They even get Dinosaur's J Mascis to guest on "Giving It All Away," the album's most buoyant track. The Southern rock of the band's debut is toned down considerably, but the sludge remains (with the exception of "Run From the Gun," an acoustic-heavy ballad reminiscent of Oasis). Sugar brings back grunge's brooding bluster in welcome fashion.
