Even though the fine tunes on this EP didn't quite fit the mood of 2008's Narrow Stairs, they definitely deserve to be released. (Oh, once-cherished B-sides, why did you desert us in this cold digital age?) Ben Gibbard knows how to meld bittersweet vibes with solid pop hooks so that "My Mirror Speaks" and the spikier "I Was Once a Loyal Lover" both soar with the power of singles, not bonus cuts. Also included is "A Diamond and a Tether," which holds a warm Americana glow, and an acoustic version of Narrow Stairs's "Talking Bird."
