There are countless Lady Day tributes out there, but Bridgewater gets it right. The songs serve to tell many sides of Holiday's art and life. There is a wide gulf between the joyous "Fine and Mellow," the pained "Good Morning Heartache" and the brutal American crimes of "Strange Fruit." Bridgewater is a daring modernist who knows how to bring listeners in instead of scaring them away. She is also a wise bandleader who shows off stellar work from saxophonist James Carter, drummer Lewis Nash and bassist Christian McBride.
