Deep Purple's first without either Ian Gillan or Roger Glover, Burn is closer to "Empty Pages"-style Traffic than the metal touchstone Machine Head was. David Coverdale would go on to greater fame with Whitesnake, namely as the guy singing in that video with the woman in white lingerie humping a car ("Here I Go Again"). But the title cut is one of the all-time classic Deep Purple riffs and "Lay Down, Stay Down" is some heavy boogie. Despite Hammond runs and classical breaks, the vocal production and Coverdale's delivery are a neon sign pointing to the hair metal to come.
