Biography

A longtime veteran of the European Free Improvisation scene, Derek Bailey has created a style of playing that is uniquely his own. Characterized by heavy use of string harmonics and atonal clicks of varying color, Derek Bailey's intricate guitar work has redefined the sonic potential of the instrument. A lifetime of instrumental introspection has made him one of the world's finest and most disciplined improvisers. He has collaborated with a surprising variety of musicians, nearly all of whom are legends in their own right. Among the impressive list of musical partners are the likes of Anthony Braxton, Gavin Bryars, Han Bennink, Min Tanaka and even Japanese progressive rockers the Ruins. His influence on the form is nearly immeasurable -- very few musicians have stamped such a personal touch on their instrument, nor inspired so many others to find their own voice and language. One of the greatest, most historically vital and influential musicians of our time, his work should not be missed by anyone interested in the craft of musical improvisation.
