Bell is more Jars of Clay-style rock than Webb's usual alternative brand, and the steady rhythm suggests a close relationship between the man and his metronome. Where Webb wins is in his clever, upbeat compositions. "I wanna court you on the record label's dime," he quips in "Marry You" before offering, "I wanna read the Bible and I wanna make out." The jangley "Name" shimmies, but the Beatles nod is too easy, if unavoidable: they might also be the influence behind Bell's themes of "peace and love" and its invitation to make the world a better place.
