This young Irish trad band had just celebrated ten years in existence with the compilation Decade when they went into the studio and recorded Spirit, and it was as if that summation freed them to go further as a group than they ever had. The choice of songs is superb -- ranging from traditionals to Bob Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather" -- and the production shines, swaying with sea-sickness on the Dylan track, quietly bubbling behind Cathy Jordan's lackadaisical caress of a voice on "Soldier Laddie." Few trad bands approach pop music and survive with their souls intact; Dervish does.
