Lady Sings The Blues (Sdtk) (Soundtrack)
by Diana Ross
Released: Nov 1972
Ross earned an Oscar nod for her on-screen portrayal of Billie Holiday, and the accompanying soundtrack to the film is every bit as remarkable. From the a cappela rendition of "Lady Sings the Blues" that kicks off the album to the loose and dirty version of "T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness if I Do," Ross captures Holliday's dueling spirit of defiance and need without resorting to retracing her exact phrasing. Unfortunately, there are skits and maudlin instrumentals interspersed throughout, and oftentimes Ross only sings half the composition. Still, this is essential for fans of Ross and Holiday.
