It's easy to enjoy Dionne Warwick's hit soundtrack for Valley of the Dolls without enduring the Hollywood soap opera that inspired it. She may lean towards melodrama -- hear the frothy orchestration of "For the Rest of My Life," or the tortured emotions of the title track. But she has keen jazz-pop sensibilities. Coupled with Bacharach & David's arrangements and lyrics, her lovely songbird voice fuels the "beautiful balloon" of "Up, Up & Away" and the finger-snapping hum of "As Long as There's an Apple Tree" and "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" Her good taste is infectious.
