The Cool World is a long-forgotten movie from the early '60s that was a kind of high-class precursor to the blaxploitation movement. Don't worry if you've never even heard of it; what's important about it is that it features an unusually fine mainstream bop soundtrack by Dizzy Gillespie. This one plays like a complete album, and such talents as James Moody (woodwinds) and the young Kenny Barron (piano) help round out the band. BTW: the "Duke" featured in many of the song titles has nothing to do with Mr. Ellington; it's the name of the movie's anti-hero.
