DJ Rap

With her decidedly tough demeanor and expert production skills, DJ Rap is the crowned queen of Jungle. Born Charissa Savero in Singapore, Rap was raised in such diverse locales as Indonesia, Malta and Africa before settling in England. The youthful runaway-turned-raver spent all of the '90s perfecting an implosive Hardcore/Jungle fusion that proves she's anything but nice. A singer-songwriter at heart, Rap's lush, pop-hopeful Drum 'n' Bass style often layers choice bits of live instrumentation, blood-curdling breakbeats, graceful guitars and celestial ambience. Eloquent arrangements feature Rap's own vocal stylings, which sound like a cross between Madonna and Garbage's Shirley Manson. Her lyrical messages offer snippets of sermons preaching the tenets of "girl power" to the masses. Wickedly soft.
