Recorded primarily in the early 1980s, Black Mountain Rag is a collection of material Watson put out under the Flying Fish label. Watson's exact, highly influential flat-pick playing is supported by his son Merle on fiddle, and a characteristically solid backing band. Bluegrass, Western swing and ancient waltzes are the order of the day, highlighted by the lighthearted "Smoke Smoke Smoke" and the Celtic touches that mark "Red Rocking Chair," not to mention the 18 other tracks that will no doubt please longtime fans and newcomers alike.
