Released: Apr 1972

Trumpeter Donald Byrd had already played in combos led by Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and John Coltrane by the time he "went electric" in the early '70s. This album is his first with the Mizell brothers producing, a relationship that produced several of the best soul-jazz albums of all time. Melting down Byrd's hard-bop style into a more elastic, soul-soaked sound, Black Byrd took jazz into a funky, psychedelic new direction.
