In his first foray into electric jazz, trumpeter Donald Byrd hews religiously to the opiated wah-wah of Miles Davis' landmark fusion experiments. With reverbed horn, heavy keyboards, slinky bell-and-shaker percussion, and a languid groove, Electric Byrd could almost be outtakes from the Bitches Brew sessions, which were recorded a year or so earlier. Byrd wouldn't discover his own unique electric sound for another two years when he hooked up with the Mizell brothers for his first soul-jazz opus, Black Byrd.
